The Industrial and Economic Policy Committee, formed in 1975, is responsible for analysis of economic and sociological factors which may affect the automobile in modern society and the future of the automobile. The Committee focuses on issues such as the economic role of the industry and road transport, transport policy and taxation, weights and dimensions of commercial vehicles, and the socio-economic consequences of energy-saving initiatives and environmental protection.
The Committee may establish ad hoc groups or subcommittees to address specific issues when requested by the OICA Assembly or at the initiative of a Committee member. Ad hoc Task Forces were established in 1992 to study the issues of: harmonization of export statistics, global warming, urban traffic, and external costs of the motor vehicle. When appropriate, the Committee defines joint positions of the automobile industry and represents the industry’s views to governmental and international bodies and to the general public. From nine original member countries, the Committee has expanded until nearly all OICA member Associations now participate in Committee work.
